An Iraqi city, the center of Karbala Governorate, located in the Middle Euphrates region. It is considered one of the most important holy cities for Shiites due to the presence of the shrine of Imam Hussein bin Ali and his companions who were martyred with him in the Al-Taf incident. Its population is about 900 thousand people, according to 2016 estimates, making it the seventh most populous city in Iraq.

Shrine of Imam Hussein
It is considered the holiest place for Shiite Muslims, and it includes the shrine of Imam Hussein bin Ali. The Hussein Shrine is the place where Hussein bin Ali was buried in Karbala in Iraq after the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH, and Muslims of the Shiite sect go to it in order to visit it and seek blessings from his shrine. The Hussein Shrine is located in the center of the city of Karbala, and history conveys that the first people to take care of the grave were the Bani Asad tribe, and they contributed with Imam Al-Sajjad in burying the body of Imam Hussein, and they created a drawing of his grave and erected a flag for him so that his traces would not be studied. When Al-Mukhtar bin Abi Ubaid Al-Thaqafi assumed command of Kufa in the year 65 AH.
